History of Calgary West

The Calgary West Rotary Club was chartered in 1967. The club was sponsored by the Manchester Rotary Club which became the Rotary Club of Calgary South.

There were 31 Rotarians from the Manchester Club who came to celebrate the launch of the new club in Canada’s Centennial year. The meeting included explanations about the benefits of Rotary, how clubs typically operated and the opportunities for service. There were also two guests at that first meeting.

The Can-Do Club

Calgary West soon earned the nickname of the ‘Can-Do’ club. It quickly became highly integrated with the community.

The Rotarians quickly identified needs within the community and began developing ways to meet them. Sometimes projects were brought to the club by various community organizations.

Other times club members were made aware of a community need and took it upon themselves to bring it to the club for consideration for funding, volunteering or both.

Even today ideal community projects involve members engaged in hands-on work accompanied by a donation to the organization. That has been the nature of partnerships with organizations like the Calgary Inter Faith Food Bank, Feed the Hungry or N’Step, an organization that helps single Moms graduate from High School.

Meeting Locations

The first meeting was held at the Summit Hotel. When first built, it was and one of the tallest buildings in Calgary.

The hotel was built and operated by Sam Switzer. What made the hotel an icon was that it was round and soon became a destination for visitors from around the world. Sam joined Calgary West while it met at the hotel and became a lifelong Rotarian.
