Weekly Speaker Program

July 23, 2018: Gwyn Lewis, Professional Boxer.     Bowmont Boxing Club

Ben Kormos introduced our featured speaker, member Gwyn Lewis, a professional boxer.

Gwyn, a native Calgarian, was born the year before the Calgary Winter Olympics, and currently works in a firm specializing in IT security systems, earning his education at Mount Royal University.

From 2002 to 2006 Gwyn was a member of the national luge team, where he gained a lot of international experience, learned to face his fears and overcome them, and through that build confidence and character. He has even survived running with the bulls, Pamplona, 2016!

Gwyn began his boxing career in 2007, the year after retiring from the luge team, and in the next decade fought 64 amateur bouts. He is in the Beaumont Boxing Club, which has high calibre trainers and coaches, and produces excellent boxers. In 2017, he turned professional, and has won his first three fights.

Gwyn is a boxing coach at his club, and, among other things, teaches a Fun Box Class weekly for kids, helping them to develop a good attitude, and teaching them the basics of effective footwork, body movement and defence. The key is keeping the fists up, elbows ready and how to read clues to the opponent’s intentions.

Following his presentation, we were treated to a video of Gwyn’s second pro fight, which was quite short, since it did not go the distance, but ended in the 4th round with a TKO after several knockdowns. This makes his record 3-0. His 4th professional fight will be September 8th at the Deerfoot Inn Casino. Tickets are available from Gwyn.

Gwyn was thanked by President Tim, and presented with our world famous Boltman.
