Kent joined the Rotary Club of Calgary Fish Creek in 2005. He has been Club Secretary, President, International Service Director, Membership Director and Rotary Foundation Chair. When not busy with Rotary he works as a market researcher and consultant in agri-business. In 2010 he stumbled into what would become his Rotary passion, in a very Rotary way. He started asking a lot of questions about ShelterBox… until the Rotarian running the Canadian arm invited Kent to join the Board of Directors. Kent served as Chair of the Canadian organization from 2015-2019 and continues to volunteer as a Director and Ambassador. |

Steacy’s career began in the Grade 1 classroom, where she became passionate about helping children develop a love of reading. Later, as a literacy consultant, Steacy became inspired by a movement to ensure every child could read by the end of third grade, setting them up for success in school and in life. It became her mission to help all children read with confidence and joy, and this was the driving vision of Calgary Reads.
What began as a volunteer reading tutor program in just two schools is now a vibrant reading movement that reaches children, families and educators in so many ways. As a reading champion possibilitarian, and placemaker, one of Steacy’s proudest achievements is The Little Red Reading House, a magical home that lets children experience the joy of family reading time and the power of book ownership. |

In Rotary, it is often said that when you give, it will surely come back in many forms and impact many more people than just the first line recipients. On Monday Sept 13, 2021, as part of this subject, we present an international program on a dynamic project in Kenya started by an individual who believes that where there is hope, there is progress. Born in the city of Kisumu, on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya, of a three generation business family, she completed university in the UK, has been a childhood educator, accomplished artist, published writer and social entrepreneur who has devoted much of her life in Nairobi, Kenya, empowering marginalized young women to create opportunities for themselves and their families. Her program has received many awards from such agencies as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, Canada’s International Alliance for Women, the Michael Jordan Foundation and more. Her project has been featured on the BBC and helped raise awareness around the globe; and she was a recipient of a world community grant from our club several years ago. She is a senior active member of the Kenyan Girl Guides, a trustee of the Kenyan Girl Guides Association and an honorary member of the World Association of Girl Guides. |

How to build better BRAINS
Sep. 20, 2021
Meeting will open for entry at 11:30 AM MDT and begin at 12:00 PM MDT. Join Zoom Meeting Meeting ID: 841 3358 2710 Healthy eating, activity, sleep, water, all build better BRAINS and bodies. About Deb:
In 2002 the World Health Organization stated “this is the first generation of children to die BEFORE their parents due to preventable nutritional diseases.” As an educator for 27 years inspiring children to love science, food and being active, I felt I could do something to change this stat. I started NSTEP (Nutrition Students Teachers Exercising with Parents) a small registered charity that has grown into 3 provinces. From Jan. 2010 to June 20 2020 NSTEP has educated over 54,000 children and youth in both school and community programs. This presentation will explain WHY healthy eating and activity build better brains. Nutrition + Activity + EDUCATION=Brighter futures. She is a member of Rotary Club of Calgary Sarcee. Deb is married to Ron, has 2 children and 3 delightful energetic grandchildren. |

HANDS ON SERVICE PROJECT AT THE FIELD OF CROSSES
For most of the year it is just a field, a five acre City Park known as Sunyside Bank on which only a cenotaph recognizes its significance. But for 11 days in November Sunnyside Bank Park becomes The Field of Crosses and the most spiritual place in Calgary. This year Calgary & area Rotarians are invited to participate in sponsoring The Field of Crosses financially as well as in service. Here's your opportunity to work alongside fellow Rotarians as well as their friends and family (Each One Bring One!).
Just click here to see the time slots available and sign up to be in service to those we remember at this time.

COFFEE AT THE CROSSES
You are invited to - COFFEE AT THE CROSSES – Meet at West end of the Field adjacent to the parking lot located at 200 Memorial Drive NW
For eleven days leading to Remembrance Day, on a five acre park on Memorial Drive, 3,500 crosses stand as silent sentinels reminding Calgarians of the ultimate sacrifice paid by our military to protect the freedom we enjoy in this great country. The Field of Crosses recognizes individually the 3,500 Southern Albertans who paid the ultimate sacrifice but also recognizes that, from all across this great country called Canada, 120,000 heroes gave up their lives for our freedom. 120 special crosses on a knoll in the park recognizes those 120,000. WE WILL NEVER FORGET It is incumbent on all to honour our fallen. Each day that passes we move further away from the wars our country was involved in; the heroes pass, time pushes on and the future gets in the way of the past as we move through our own days and months and years. The Field of Crosses Sunlight and Sunset and Remembrance Day ceremonies are important reminders. |

KOTO - Know One, Teach One
Nov. 22, 2021 7:00 p.m.
Meeting will open for entry at 6:30 PM MDT and begin at 7:00 PM MDT. Join Zoom Meeting Meeting ID: 841 3358 2710 For in person attendance ( Click Here ), registration by Thusday Nov 18 at 5:00 PM is required. Jimmy Pham AM Born in Saigon and raised in Sydney, Jimmy Pham returned to Vietnam in the late 1990s to work as a tour leader. While in Hanoi, he struck up a friendship with a group of young people living and working on the streets to support their families. He used his salary to help the kids, but knew this was only a temporary fix for a long-term problem. The street kids needed skills, jobs and an income for a better life. With that, Jimmy’s social enterprise, KOTO - Know One, Teach One - was born. Jimmy left his job in the tourism industry and opened a sandwich shop to provide jobs for young people. He soon realized that the children needed more than just a job, they needed vocational training to secure a better future for them and their families. KOTO’s student numbers increased and it expanded its operations to include a fine-dining restaurant, cooking courses and catering service. Jimmy has received numerous awards including the 2021 Waislitz Global Citizens’ Choice Award, 2013 UNICEF Zero Award for Social Innovation and 2011 Young Global Leader Award from the World Economic Forum as well as being appointed a member of the Order of Australia. |
