The Future of Agriculture and Food
Aug. 15, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Meeting will open for entry at 11:30 AM MDT and begin at 12:00 PM MDT. Join Zoom Meeting Meeting ID: 841 3358 2710 Canadians have never viewed the agriculture and food industries as being important. There are some good reasons for this. Agricultural producers represent only 2-3% of the votes in this country, so it is very difficult to capture the attention of our political leaders – both provincially and federally. But perhaps a more important reason is that the Canadian food consumer spends a very small percentage of their disposable income on food at approximately 10-11% and next to the United States this is the lowest in the world. Canadians simply have the highest quality and an abundant supply of food at very low prices. This however has changed in recent months as we see the cost to the consumer rising rapidly and now has become much more top of mind with the citizens of Canada. There are a number of reasons for this, global weather issues, climate change, and recent civil unrest in many parts of the world predominately the Russian Ukrainian war. These production related issues have been exacerbated with significant supply chain issues and supply shortages of fertilizer, and a lot of the inputs that farmers need to maximize crop production. The thing I find most frustrating is that many jurisdictions around the world have begun to make very significant demands on how farmers should produce the food we are so dependent upon. |

District Governor Visit
Oct. 17, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Steve worked for 33-years in marketing and management career in Agriculture. Steve with his wife Pat went with other Rotarians for 3 weeks to Uganda and did volunteer work in the specialties of agriculture, education and health. Steve and Pat served a volunteer mission for one and a half years in St. Lucia in the lower Caribbean. Shortly after their return in 2017 they had the unfortunate experience of losing their oldest granddaughter in a vehicle accident then early in 2020 they lost one of their youngest granddaughters in a swimming accident. This has been quite devastating to their family but the parents of these children and they have turned to service to take away some of the pain and to honor these girls. In conjunction with their local Rotary club they have participated in fund-raising, and service opportunities with a student service club with their local Indigenous Reservation. They have also participated in other service activities such as blankets for babies, honoring health providers and at local schools promoting Look up Ad’s to promote less media and more interpersonal time. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Raymond and is the District Governor Nominee 2010 / 2021. Steve is married to Pat, and has five children and fourteen grandchildren Join Zoom Meeting Meeting ID: 841 3358 2710 |

Technology in Society
Dec. 05, 2022 12:00 p.m.
As a member of the Government of Canada’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Smart Communities, Thomas was exposed to how the “best and brightest” thinkers were shaping the use of technology to improve our individual and collective lives. That program granted $60M to twelve projects across Canada, some of which have become icons for the intelligent application of technological tools. Thomas continues as an active participant in the activities of the New York City-based Intelligent Community Forum, helping to adjudicate the Smart Community of the Year competition, and also write and consult in this area. A lifelong interest in information security has resulted in my teaching Canada’s first course in Computer Security (in 1974!) as well as the creation of a CBC Ideas series called Crimes of the Future which predicted future problems such as identity theft and biocrimes such as “organlegging.” This program won the Canadian Science Writers Award in 1984. Thomas does regular technical and non-technical analysis in this field and have collaborated with law enforcement, law firms, individuals and corporations on urgent issues such as identity theft, cyberstalking, information warfare and privacy issues. Thomas was qualified as an expert witness in 2004 in “computer forensics and the workings of the Internet” by the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta. Thomas also spent some fascinating time with Canadian Forces Bravo Company in Afghanistan. In addition to scholarly publications and conferences, Thomas is a regular columnist for the Calgary Herald and other Canwest newspapers, as well as the Business Edge News Magazine, where Thomas served as National Technology Correspondent. Thomas appears regularly on radio and television discussing high tech issues, and serves on boards including the Information Technology Council of Canada, the Rotary Club of Calgary, and the Canadian Voice Care Foundation. Thomas’s current research focuses on the positive and negative effects of technology adoption both in the developed and developing worlds, and how technology can be a driver for economic and social development. Thomas hasdeveloped the concepts of “Internet Persistence” and “Silent Information” in recent book chapters, and continue to work to help us define the ever-changing line between the useful sharing of information and the (sometimes unforeseen and self-inflicted) invasion of our privacy. String Group Performance
Dec. 12, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Bishop Carroll High School has one of the largest music programs in Alberta, with over 350 students involved in Strings, Bands, Choirs, and Jazz ensembles. The Strings program is comprised of four award-winning ensembles: Ensemble Eruditio, Ensemble Intermezzo, Cantabile Strings and the Virtuosi Strings. Virtuosi String students are enrolled in private lessons, participate in sectionals and large ensemble rehearsals, study with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra clinicians and Mount Royal University Conservatory faculty, and attend an annual Strings Camp. The Virtuosi Strings consistently attain “Superior” rankings at the Calgary Performing Arts Festival (CPAF), often perform at the Stars of the Festival concert, and are multi-year recipients of the CFAC-TV and Jeanette Sharples awards for top-ranking orchestra. In December 2017, they proudly represented Canada at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago during our country’s sesquicentennial year. We look forward to performing for you!
