RCCW Zoom Meeting
On this very warm but smoke infused day (BC forest fires), the club met both on-site at the Grey Eagle and on zoom. Being our first hybrid meeting of the new Rotary year, we had about 26 people present and about 13 on zoom at the commencement of the meeting.

President Marlene Doherty called the meeting to order promptly at 12 noon with the singing of O Canada.

The format of this Rotary year offers some variation on the theme:
  1. Speakers will go on first and club business will follow.
  2. Monthly team meetings will be called “Community and conversations” which will include one short report from a recipient (of our support) organization, some club announcements and some classification talks called “My Story”.
  3. Club assemblies will be called Club Forums and will be held periodically.
  4. This year’s program (of speakers) will include local and international speakers with the odd occasion for an evening zoom or face to face meeting, instead of the daytime meeting, to accommodate an international speaker.

Guest Speaker: Dan Doherty, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) .

PDG Dan was introduced introduced by Marie Rickard.

Dan Doherty is a past president of Calgary West Rotary, where he has been an active member for nearly 40 years. He has also served as the District Chair for the District New Generations in Action Committee.

Dan has a passion for advocating for and empowering youth, especially those without a voice. He has been very engaged with students at Tsuu Tina High School, as well as the Aboriginal program at the Boys and Girls Club. He is also the past Chair of Hull Child and Family Services, Accessible Housing, and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation.

Dan has been on 15 Mexico home building trips. Also, having recently returned from a Polio National Immunization Day in Ethiopia and mission work in Uganda and Malawi, Dan is reinvigorated in the Rotary Polio eradication fight.

Dan was awarded the Distinguished “Service Above Self Award”, the highest tribute awarded in Rotary. Dan, who was the District 5360: Governor for 2018-2019, regularly presents across Zone 28 on membership and diversity issues. Recently, he was a key presenter at the Black North Initiative.

Dan currently sits on the boards of Humanity Auxilium, Calgary Immigration Services, and Advisory Board for KomKan Africana Institute and City of Calgary Social Venture Fund

Dan and Marlene have been married 43 years, have four incredible kids, three special grandchildren and one dog, Molly, who loves to be everyone’s friend.

Dan presented on this very topical subject which is currently being examined quite thoroughly by major corporations, governments and most institutional groups in North America. This is the precursor to another major wave n world thinking on the matter of diversity and inclusion.

The highlights:
  • Rotary has a DEI statement. Rotarians through the 4-Way Test know the basis and have talked about this for a century. We now need to live the 4-Way Test.
  • Principles of Brave space include our engagement in looking at this subject with curiosity, courage and engaged conviction that we need to examine, and alter as needed.
  • Diversity of thinking about new ideas and new constructs will be the order of the day.
  • Bringing awareness to biases and prejudices may need to be considered.
  • Seeking to hear and understand others. They too have a story.
  • Focusing on possibilities rather than the messenger.
  • Acknowledging and appreciating a different viewpoint.
  • Expect discomfort, but realize that this is the direction in which the world is leaning.
  • Society is fragmented due to media and other social media agencies that tend polarize groups, their thinking and their actions.
  • Dialogue needs to happen often and meaningfully.
  • What about Ageism, stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination? These are as old as humanity, and needs to be revisited.
  • Are equity and equality the same? How do we define and adjust?
  • Inclusion? What does that mean to you, to society, to those that are traditionally not included?
  • Do we need to listen in order that we may learn? How do we reposition?
  • History has shown that some changes need to be made, and a form of reconciliation and adjustment is always in order. Learning and correcting may be the path to follow.
  • Do we need to listen more to what is not said in order to learn?

He ended with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr and one from Mahatma Gandhi.
"In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." (MLK)
"The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem." (MG)

This was a very informative presentation about a very controversial subject. There were many questions and discussions.

Thanks: David Mills presented a very enriching vote of thanks to PDG Dan.

Announcements
  1. Clarence Buckley reminded us that the highway cleanup (started by the late Larry Doyle) is to be held this Saturday, July 24th. Assemble at Callaway Park parking lot (east side) at 9.00 am and a car pool will take you to the location for a cleanup followed by a no-host brunch at the Petro Canada diner. Please let Clarence know if you will attend: 825-413-6430.
  2. Duncan Stanners announced that our annual sale of cherries (now in its 26th year) and Okanagan peaches has met with good support. Please collect your orders (unless they are being delivered to you) on Thursday, July 22nd at 12- 2 pm at the Grace Presbyterian Church, 15th Avenue and 10th Street SW.
  3. President Marlene reported that the Waterton Peace Park assembly will be held (an annual Rotary event of “hands across the line” where Rotarians from our district and the USA district of Montana meet at Waterton to celebrate peace every September) September 17th-19th. All Rotarians are encouraged to participate in this unique event.
  4. President Marlene reported that we had a financial security breach with our bank accounts held at the ATB, but this matter has been resolved, thanks to the hard work of the bank and our Judy Cochran.
  5. President Marlene thanked team 3 for the organization of today’s events.
  6. Wild card evenings: President Marlene advised that the survey showed that (like Tim Anderson’s Thursday night session) we could engage in non-structured social or learning sessions. Members are encouraged to send in your input on what these sessions should include. We have booked a date of Saturday, August 7th, 4- 6 pm in a park, to be designated, for a no-host program of family and friends. Stay tuned.
  7. Also, Barbie Hames has arranged for the club to have a few evenings of “wild card” events during the year at the Calgary Golf and Country Club with a special rate dinner. Dates and event highlights will be posted. This may offer a great deal of fun with members, partners and friends.

Rotary Annual theme pins are available for any members that have not received them. Contact Marlene or Gord Cox.

Next week’s meeting will be held on zoom only. It will be our first monthly or so community and conversations session. See you all next week to roll out the new format!
