President Chris called meeting to order at 12:15 and promptly turned it over to Barbie Hames for announcements.
Firstly, she wanted to acknowledge Rotary for organizing “The Indigenous Blanket Ceremony” which she and a few other attended on January 17th. This interactive workshop taught participants about 500 years of Indigenous history—from pre-contact through colonization—using blankets to represent land and participants as Indigenous peoples.
Secondly, upcoming event to involve a Rotary outing - the Skijor Showdown, scheduled for February 7th (date changed from 17th) at the Millarville Racetrack. The event will feature horse-drawn skiing competitions and a "chariot race" with a couch, along with a beer garden hosted by Bottle Screw Bill's Brewery. Tickets are $35 for adults, and transportation will be provided by a bus leaving from Bill's Pub at 10:30 AM. The event will run from 12 PM to 4 PM, with a red-carpet catwalk for best-dressed attendees, and participants are encouraged to wear humorous or fur-related attire.

Jeff Hodgson is the Director of ReStore Operations with Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta. Since joining the organization in 2022, Jeff has overseen Habitat’s ReStore operations across Southern Alberta.
In his role, Jeff focuses on maximizing the ReStore’s potential as a vital social enterprise that supports Habitat’s charitable mission—helping families build strength, stability, and independence through affordable home ownership.
Mitch Ravvin is a dedicated member of the Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta team, where he works to Ca the organization’s mission of building safe, affordable housing for local families. Recognizing the urgent need for affordable housing, Mitch applies his talents to mobilize individuals, businesses, foundations, and government partners who share a desire to make a meaningful impact in the community.
Habitat's Affordable Homeownership Program
Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta works to provide affordable homeownership opportunities, focusing on families who would otherwise not qualify for traditional mortgages. The organization builds starter homes and provides mortgage loans, through a combination of volunteer labor and paid trades, requiring partner families to complete 500 hours of volunteer work. Since 1990, Habitat has helped over 400 families, including 35 families last year, impacting more than 1,200 children. Jeff discussed their recent builds, including a 24-unit project in Livingston and plans for future projects in Chestermere and Medicine Hat,
Habitat’s ReStore
There are 2 ReStores in Calgary which accept and sell quality new and used Building Materials, Furniture, Appliances and more. Every purchase helps reduce waste and fund construction of affordable homes. Last year, the Restore operations were highlighted, as generating $1.6 million net income to support new Home Construction as well as diverting 3,900 tons from landfills.
Jeff and Mitch answered several questions and acknowledge our partnership and support over the last 20 years. It is estimated we have provided $750,000 towards Habitat for Humanity as well as project volunteers for several home builds in Calgary.
David Wartman expressed the thanks of the Club and presented a certificate to both Mitch and Jeff acknowledging a contribution made in each of their names to ShelterBox.

Jersey a Rotaract Student from the Rotaract Club of the University of Calgary had and announcement about their annual Spring Fling Gala Fundraiser. The event supports their focus on youth mental health & recovery initiatives. Last year they had 200 attendees and raised $32,700. Wow.
Jersey will provide details to President Chris who will send out a notice.
