Patricia spoke to the shocking extent of homelessness in Calgary. We have 2,911 homeless people, 51% of all Alberta.
The Calgary Homeless Foundation is addressing this issue through allocation of resources for highest impact and outcomes, building knowledge and understanding, and galvanizing public and political will. They administer funding for 29 different agencies. Their budget is $62million, most of which comes from the government of Alberta, of which 90% goes to programs.
Chris Ritter moderated the questions raised.
Please note that the Calgary Homeless Foundation does not work with the homeless directly. Contact 211 to find the appropriate service providers.
Duncan Stanners thanked our speakers.
Club Business - Membership types
President Bill joined the meeting and described the different types of membership and the cost. He noted that $204 of our annual fees go to Rotary International and the District.
Darren Grierson described four options proposed for membership:
1. Active member. Dues $350. Full voting rights.
2. Young Rotarian (members younger than 40). Dues $225. Must become active member when over 40 or after five years.
3. Family - spouses and children of full members with full voting rights. Dues $225
4. Trial - initially $100 for the first 6six months, then $125 for the remainder of the year. Must become active member afterward.
5. Associate - non voting for snowbirds, students, early career and family. Dues $200
It was noted that dues are a small part of the cost of being a Rotarian. The real cost, with meetings, fundraisers and social events is around $2,000 per year.
A Zoom poll was used to judge the support for each type. Family and young Rotarian memberships were supported. Trial and associate were not.
President Bill thanked team 2 and closed the meeting.
