The Rotary Club of Calgary West has committed $10,000 CAD to the Nepal Orphanage Equipment Project in partnership with Child Haven International, supporting 100 children at the Kathmandu Home in Nepal. Funded through a $7,500 District Community Development Grant and a $2,500 club contribution, the project strengthens education, nutrition, and vocational skills training. Enhancements include a new E-Library, a peanut butter grinder to improve nutrition and reduce costs, and expanded tailoring training with electric sewing machines and a full-year trainer. The funds have been received, and the project is now underway.

The Rotary Club of Calgary West is proud to support the Nepal Orphanage Equipment Project in partnership with Child Haven International (CHI), benefiting the 100 children who live and learn at the Child Haven Kathmandu Home in Nepal.

Child Haven International is a Canadian registered, not-for-profit charity founded in 1985 and inspired by the ideals and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. CHI is dedicated to assisting children and women in developing countries who are in need of food, education, health care, shelter, clothing, and emotional and moral support. Through long-term, locally led initiatives in Nepal, India, Uganda, and Haiti, CHI focuses on sustainable solutions that empower individuals and strengthen communities.

This initiative began in Summer 2025. We are pleased to report that the full amount has now been received by Child Haven International’s office in Maxville, Ontario, allowing the project to move forward.

The funding addresses three critical areas that directly enhance daily life and future opportunities for the children at the Kathmandu Home:

Basic Education and Literacy
An E-Library will be established, including computer equipment and Kindle devices, significantly upgrading learning resources and expanding access to digital and reading materials that support literacy, independent learning, and academic success.

Nutrition
A new peanut butter grinder will provide a fresh, reliable, and cost-effective source of protein for daily meals. The equipment is expected to save the Home approximately $90 per month, allowing funds to be redirected to other essential needs.

Tailoring Training and Skills Development
The tailoring program will be strengthened through the purchase of four electric sewing machines and funding for a trainer’s salary for one year. This hands-on vocational training equips youth with marketable employment skills, supporting self-sufficiency as they transition into adulthood.

Child Haven International has confirmed that the Kathmandu Home has been notified and can now proceed with purchases, installation, and training. All documentation and receipts will be carefully maintained to meet Rotary grant reporting requirements, with progress updates and photos to be shared as the project advances.

In a note of appreciation, Robin Cappuccino of Child Haven International shared:

“I am very grateful to report that the check for $10,000 has been received by our office in Maxville. All of us are most excited for the new Peanut Butter Grinder, Library Enhancements, and increased Tailoring Training Supports! We will be sure to save all the documentation and receipts needed for reporting purposes. Huge thanks on behalf of all of us and the children and staff your contribution will help uplift.”

This project reflects Rotary’s shared values of service, dignity, and opportunity, and demonstrates how thoughtful investments in education, nutrition, and skills training can create lasting change. The Rotary Club of Calgary West is honoured to partner with Child Haven International to help build brighter, more secure futures for children in Kathmandu.
