What a festive room – Santa came down from the North Pole for a quick visit to see the Rotarians on the “nice” list and get a picture with the jolly man. I can only guess what he might have said to those on his “naughty” list. As we came into the room, we were entertained with music courtesy of Sarah Ritter and Ethan Mung. The tree was up, and Rotarians opened their hearts and brought in gifts and/or cash donations for Connaught School, Alpha House, and the Children’s Cottage. Linda thanked all the donors for their generosity. With the ringing of the bell and a “HoHoHo” from Santa the meeting was underway at 11:59 am. Santa was filling in for President, Rob Rakochey. Then Santa was off in a flash as he had so much left to do in preparation of the BIG night. Rob gave us a brief glimpse of how the Indigenous peoples celebrate Christmas. Many see Christmas as a time to gather with family and community, fostering a sense of unity and connection. There are many ways to celebrate depending on the cultural background. Overall, the Christmas festivities among Canadian Indigenous peoples serve as a testament to their resilience, cultural pride, and enduring spirit of community. O Canada was sung. Sa’adat Keshavjee was our emcee and wished us all Rotary goodwill and peace. Families and friends were invited, and we had 50 people in attendance. Guests were introduced by each table and Des De Freitas retrained us in the singing of the Welcome song (let’s say he tried). Henriette von Glasow was called to the front along with Judy Cochran. Henriette opened her Christmas gifts from Calgary West and was pleased with her parcel of goodies. We were served a lovely turkey dinner by the staff at Grey Eagle. While we enjoyed lunch and fellowship, we had a trivia quiz. What is Christmas without a trivia quiz on the subject? Gerry Meek ran this segment of the program. I am not sure if he crafted the trivia questions. They weren’t easy. Shelly Dyson’s table were the winners and received a package of Christmas cookies to share. Our Song Master, Des, returned to lead us in various Christmas songs. Song sheets were courtesy of Eileen and the Rhythm of the Rockies which we heard at Pinebrook. Shelly Dyson made the center pieces and kindly gifted one guest at each table with their centerpiece. David Williams could not attend the meeting today, so Sa’adat read us ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Brings back memories. President Rob took to the podium to close. Thanks and applause went to the Christmas organizing Committee for today’s festive program. Our Rotary Theme this year is “Create Hope in the World.” With all that we do, we are moving the needle and all the while creating opportunities for growth and peace and that should give us all hope. Rob acknowledged we are an extraordinary Club with extraordinary members. He is slightly behind in his weight loss program but is confident come the New Year that will not be a problem. Give to the Calgary Rotary Club Foundation to support not only Rob but our Club! Rob closed with “I hope you have a very Merry Xmas and a Blessed New Year.” More Santa Jokes – all groaners. My favorite - What goes Oh, oh, oh? Santa walking backwards! Next meeting January 8, 2024 Meeting adjourned at 1:10pm
