Velshi has covered a wide range of domestic, global and economic issues throughout his career, including climate change, the spread and defeat of ISIS, the refugee crisis, the Iran nuclear deal, tensions between Russia and the west, the Greek debt crisis and the global financial crisis.

Prior to joining NBC News and MSNBC in 2016, Velshi hosted “Ali Velshi On Target,” a nightly primetime show on Al Jazeera America. Before that, he served as CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent, anchor of CNN International’s “World Business Today” and host of CNN’s weekly business roundtable “Your Money.” Velshi also co-hosted CNN’s morning show, “American Morning.”

An award-winning journalist, Velshi was honored with a National Headliner Award for Business & Consumer Reporting for “How the Wheels Came Off,” a special on the near collapse of the American auto industry. His work on disabled workers and Chicago’s red-light camera scandal in 2016 earned him two News and Documentary Emmy Award nominations, adding to a nomination in 2010 for his terrorism coverage. Additionally, Velshi has taken his economic analysis to “Oprah,” “The View,” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Velshi is the author of “Gimme My Money Back” (Sterling and Ross, 2008) and co-author with CNN’s Christine Romans of “How to Speak Money” (Wiley, 2010).

Born in Kenya and raised in Canada, Velshi graduated from Queen’s University in Canada, which bestowed an honorary Doctorate of Laws upon him in 2016. Velshi splits his time between New York City and Philadelphia, where he teaches a course at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Velshi serves on the Boards of Trustees of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York (CUNY); the Chicago History Museum; Seeds of Peace; the XPrize Foundation; The National Constitution Center; and the Philadelphia Citizen. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

The 2021 Virtual Convention will be better than ever, opening more innovative opportunities to learn and to engage with the family of Rotary, near and far. You’ll be able to network in virtual lounges, meet new partners in service, and join fun activities with Rotary members from around the world.

This event is open to all Rotary members and participants from 12-16 June 2021. Registration fees are as follows:

• Promotional rate: US$49* through 11:59:59 (Chicago time - CDT) 7 May

• US$65 - 8 May through 16 June

*Registration must be paid in full between 16 April and 7 May to receive the US$49 rate.

Registration is also now open for the Rotaract, Youth Exchange Officer and Inter-Country Committee preconventions, which will be held 10-11 June 2021. The cost of each preconvention event is US$20.

Both the convention and preconvention events include access to the virtual House of Friendship.

Please note: Cancellations and refunds for registrations or associated events will be accepted through 11:59:59 (Chicago time – CDT) 31 May 2021. The cancellation fee is 20% of the registrant’s total fees paid. No refunds will be given after 31 May.

Due to new restrictions, this event has been tentatively revised to June 12 and 13. Confirmation of this will follow at a later date. 

Our club has committed to building a fence for the Reset Society. Our team leader Claude and myself have chosen the May long weekend May 22 and 23 to build the fence. 

• On the 22nd we will remove the old fence drill the holes and set the new posts in concrete. 
• On the 23 we will build the fence.
• The shifts will start at 9.00am and end hopefully around 4.00pm - suggest you bring water and coffee to drink as well as a bag lunch. 
• We will need about 8 volunteers each day - please keep in mind we will need some lifting and some skill in cutting lumber - we do have an operator for the mini excavator.

In anticpation of the 2021 Calgary Stampede Parade, Calgary Rotary West would like to have volunteers ready should we be able to participate in a parade event. There is no guarantee that a parade event will be held. The time of 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM is an estimate and may be revised as details emerge. All registered volunteers will be emailed any revisions. It is important to understand that planning will need to continue within a context of ambiguity and uncertainty given the changing landscape, but also keeping in mind that we are planning for a future state and not for the current state of restrictions. At this time we are looking for 50 volunteers. Please use the "Online Registration" on the left to sign up.
