Alicia Planincic

Economist

Alicia is an Economist at the Business Council of Alberta. She plays a crucial role in designing policy research and identifying actionable insights. She brings experience in data analytics, a passion for effective prose, and a fresh perspective of economics.

Her career trajectory began with the serendipitous experience of being accidentally assigned a study hall in a classroom for economics, and the rest unfolded from there—she studied economics at Miami University, spent several years digging into data to better understand consumers for P&G, and later completed her MAT in economics education at the University of Georgia. Most recently, she reveled in the challenge of teaching college-level economics to high school students.

Now, she has the rare opportunity to combine these disparate skills and experiences in a way that is deeply meaningful and wildly fun, to increase prosperity for all.

A small-town girl with a big appetite for adventure, she is commonly found running the Bow river or lost between the aisles of the econ, psych, and history sections of Central library looking for her next read.

New to Alberta, she aspires to ensure that Alberta is a place to dream, boldly tackle challenges, and, thrive, a place we all proudly call home.

Mary Ann Houston is a Communications Strategist at City of Calgary Fire Department.

Mary Ann will play and chat about the pipes as well as explain the significance of the sword dance!

Mary Ann began piping at the age of 12, in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she was a member of the Fraser Pipe Band. During her summers, she studied with Pipe Major Donald MacLeod, at the Saskatchewan School of the Arts and the International Music Camp, ultimately receiving her Pipe Major’s and Advanced Instructor’s Certificates. Over the years, Mary Ann has led, and played with, numerous pipe bands in the prairie provinces. Most recently, she played with the Calgary Police Service Pipe Band and Calgary’s Rocky Mountain Pipe Band. These days, Mary Ann spends most of her piping time either teaching, piping for competitive highland dancers, or piping at private functions, in and around the Calgary area. One of Mary Ann’s piping highlights is having had the opportunity to pipe for highland dancers for the last five years, at the Annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival. This annual event celebrates the heritage and history of Scots in Hawaii. Sadly, the festival has been on hold since 2019, but hopefully it will be able to return again in 2023.

Feb 24, 2022 6:00 PM

Wild Card Night - our Family Day holiday replacement is Thursday evening, February 24, 2022.

Our incoming President, Linda says "Get out of your sweats or PJ's and join us at the Calgary Golf and Country Club. --- Come Out and Have Some Fun!"

You'll learn about Calgary's Hangar Museum from Brian Desjardins, the dynamic and fully engaged Executive Director. It is an ongoing, expanding work and for many of us, it's one of those undiscovered "secrets" about Calgary. The museum has 31 aircraft, including military and civilian planes and helicopters and includes the Hawker Hurricane 5389 — a 77-year-old aircraft seen as among the top fighter planes of its day.

Join us with family, friends, spouses and significant others or any other persons you would like to have attend next Thursday February 24 from 6 pm on.

Here's what you'll enjoy:

  1.  A great presentation about the museum.
  2.  Delicious pub food table served at a sit down dinner. (Still being Covid Careful.)
  3. A great, informal evening for Rotary Reconnection.

Barbie will advise the deadline to confirm attendance but let us know now as soon as you can.

Cost is $40 per person and payment is on the spot.

HOW TO PAY!

We will collect at the door in only one of these three ways (ie no payment through the website):

  1.  Cash
  2. Cheque
  3. OR, if you forget your wallet or cheque book simply come out, I'll cover the cost and I'll bill you afterward.

The CGCC will need to know how many to prepare for so please advise to Barbie and me at these emails: tjna2002@yahoo.ca  AND bhames@shaw.ca

Important: This won't be a Zoom/Hybrid meeting. In person only.

Darby Lee Young is the Founder of Level Playing Field, an accessibility agency focused on the implementation of universal design principles and accessible best practices. Born with mild cerebral palsy, Darby works to mitigate barriers that people like her face on a daily basis. In 2020, that manifested in an unexpected and personal way, when Darby collaborated with shoe designer John Fluevog to create a line of shoes — affectionately named The Darby — with a sole that is rubber, removable, and easier to repair, taking the needs of those with particular disabilities into consideration.

The work began when Darby approached her favourite shoe designer with a problem: because of her gait, her footwear always wore down in a particular spot, and lasted anywhere from a day to a month. Rather than the repair she was looking for, John Fluevog proposed a collaboration. The bestselling ‘Darby’ line now includes five colours, and is sold across Canada and internationally.

Premji was born in Iringa, Tanzania, to a somewhat poor Ismaili family who were often on the move. First in Morogoro, then in Tanga, then on the outskirts of Mtwara, he attended a series of public schools: “I did well in my studies and was active in sports, playing soccer, cricket, and volleyball.

With the support of a university sponsorship, he ended up at the Muhimbili Faculty of Medicine in Dar es Salaam. There he studied Medicine and later Parasitology and began building a reputation as a “malaria guru.”

As a specialist, Premji took part in several influential studies. He was a leader in the Bagamoyo BedNet Project, collaboration with Johns Hopkins University that analyzed the impact of insecticide-treated bed nets. And he helped to pioneer a new diagnostic tool, popularly known as the Rapid Diagnostic Test, that’s now deployed globally for malaria diagnoses, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

Zul Premji retired to Calgary in 2016, to help take care of his grandchildren. “With time,” he writes, “hopefully I will return to Tanzania.” Until then, he speaks with the authority of someone who has met with success.
